Steed heading for Nashville - up for New Artist of the Year
By Brenda Locklear
Staff writer
Settling down in the barber's chair at Steed's Barber shop and expecting John Steed to give a haircut, may just be a thing of the past.
At least after late October - because that's when Steed heads for Nashville and his nomination as the New Artist of the Year in Christian country music.
With three chart hits, Steed may find himself at the beginning of a full-time career in Christian music. He'll be showcasing his work and singing talent from Sunday, Oct. 31 through Thrusday, Nov. 4.
Steed works with this dad at their family-owned business, Steed's Barber Shop. He writes hiw own music, plays at local churches and cut his very first album a couple of years ago. The album is titled "Good Hands Now."
As a matter of fact, the title cut is one of the three chart songs and is a tribute to his late brother.
Last year he cut a second album titled "Almost Home" - two of the songs from the album hit the charts and one of those two, "Rumbling in the Rails", went to number one. "There Goes the Neighborhood" hit ninth on the chart.
His music is being played on more than 1,200 radio stations across the nation.
He'll be playing twice during the seminar and notes that several representatives from record companies will be on hand during the event.
Several top country Christian artists, including Ken Holloway, Lisa Daggs and Midsouth, signed at Christian Country Music Association (CCMA) seminars in previous years, according to Steed.
Along with the album that Steed's already made and his chart songs, his photo appears in this year's CCMA magazine.
He's depicted with 15 other artists on a cover page and again on the inside page with featured artists at the upcoming convention. That page also includes a spread on Daggs, who is currently the association's Entertainer of the Year.
The publication touts Steed as taller than Alan Jackson, definitely country and "Looks as good too." They also note his writing abilities.
As far as the top title goes, even if he doesn't take it this year, Steed will be making a new album during the trip.
Some of the cuts from the new album will include: "You Gotta Be Tough", "Tear Down the Walls" and "Pale Horse Rider" - a song based on events in the book of Revelation.
Steed said the song is one of his darker songs and refers to the decisions a person makes in their life.
Those decisions determine whether the person will have a good ride or a bad ride, he said.
As for creating the music, Steed said he comes up with many of the lyrics while he's at the barber shop.
He said he hasn't done a lot of perfomring in Nashville, but if he gets into the music business full time, it may mean moving to Nashville and full-time travel around the country.
Steed said locally his music can be heard on 640 a.m.
